Artist Statement

This piece is unique for me. Working in ceramics (and often pushing the limits of the materials) had accustomed me to a certain amount of heartbreak and failure. All too often things go wrong within this medium. So, when I lost 2 ceramic pieces to a gust of wind, I wasn’t stunned at the sudden loss of my hard work. I was stunned that the outer portion of one of the pieces survived. What’s more, due to the process I use to create that style of piece, I surmised I could try to re-use it, hopefully returning it to its former grandeur. “Born from Ashes” is the reincarnation of that broken piece, successfully returned to splendor.
