Artist Statement

As a part of my “Intangible Remembrance” series, “Unexpected Contrast” is about memory, both in general and specific. The unique memory that inspired this piece was from a trip I took to New Zealand. I was able to experience a redwood forest (not mature) from up on walkways in the trees. What solidified the memory for me wasn’t the redwoods, which looked like large pines at that age, but the combination of the trees with the undergrowth of New Zealand Silver Ferns. That something could be so familiar and so foreign at the same time was an impression I will not soon forget.
